'When is the best time to come – when will we see the most whales?'

 

The humpback whales start heading up from their summer home in the Antarctic to their mating and birthing home in Tonga and Vava'u from mid-April each year. They are in Vava'u from July right through to mid-October when they start their incredible 8,000 km journey back to the southern feeding grounds.

 

There is no 'right time' to go whale watching in Tonga really – the whales are there throughout the season. While the whales are often around from early July we like to give them time to settle in, for their calves to be born and for the babies get to know their new world before we start our whale watching tours.

 

Our Blue Pacific Whale Watching tour season runs from late July to early October. We provide a range of tour dates covering the calves early introduction to Planet Earth time through to the inquisitive calf time in the later season. The breaching, mating, chilling out, on a mission and general whale action time happens throughout the season.

 

Humpbacks are of course creatures in the wild and masters of their environment. Sometimes weather and forces beyond our understanding lead them out to sea for a few days and sometimes there seem to be whales in every beautiful bay. With nature and wild animals at play every day is a different day whilst whale watching in Tonga - out on the beautiful Vava'u waters. 

 

Blue Pacific Whale Watching tours are all six to eight days in duration in order to give you the very best opportunity to spend extended and quality time with our giant cetacean friends and to give you the chance for a variety of encounters - and lots of time cruising around the stunning tropical islands of Vava'u.

 

We work with some of the best whale watching skippers in Vava'u.  They love the humpbacks, know their behaviours well and work hard to ensure that, when they are there, we find the whales, and have the best chances to spend quality time and swim with them.
