Life is simple in Tonga and although Vava’u has a few great cafes and restaurants, good accommodation and a funky little nightlife scene during the whale watch season, it’s all pretty laid back and wonderfully in the now.
This is not a 5 star destination and while most general services are available, if you are looking for white-coated waiters serving cocktails by the pool then Tonga in general is not the destination for you.
There is no general broadcast television in Vava’u, western newspapers are hard to find and it is very easy to forget about ‘outside’ and slip into island time. Life is very community oriented. People work, sing, play and practice their faith together with their families and friends most every day of their lives, food is fresh, simple and plentiful, and life is pretty straightforward. |
